The course Death in popular culture doesn’t only consist of a theoretical, but also a practical part in which we will develop a collage of scenes around the topic death. Our goal is not to show someone dying on stage (there are many forms of stage deaths, the most dramatical ones being the death in an opera). What interests us is rather to show the gap a dead person leaves behind. How do the family members react to this circumstance and what consequences does this have for each one of them? Does it uncover secrets concerning the dead person? How do the people left behind mourn? To what conventions do we have to keep during the burial and afterwards? We try to show what death can show about life in general and about a (fictitious) person in particular.

We’ll see where this course will lead us. So far the rehearsals have been very interesting, full of ideas and stories and anecdotes and found material, such as this short movie by Chaz Harris a New Zealand based writer and director.
